Joplin R-VIII Status Update

Joplin Public Memorial Service Today at MSSU

Governor Jay Nixon reaches out to the local religious leaders and pastors, and plans a memorial service in Joplin at 1PM Sunday UPDATE- Gov. Jay Nixon said “The people of Joplin will need to turn to a higher power to help them overcome the disaster that has struck their community.” In a press conference at  Missouri Southern State University, Wednesday.

Before the  3 pm press conference, Nixon had met with members of Joplin’s local faith-based community leaders and pastors, to discuss how they will help the community pull together in this hour of need.
Nixon said his meeting with the ministers of several churches was one of the most inspiring moments of his career as a public official and that a memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday.

The service is being held at the Missouri Southern State University Campus, in Taylor Auditorium.  The event will also be televised on all Joplin stations, plus Fox News.  For a live streaming webcast of the event, go to http://www.mo.gov/joplin-memorial-service/

Joplin Moves To Begin “Clean Sweep” Proceedings

Rebuild JoplinWith search and rescue efforts still underway, the City of Joplin is beginning clean-up efforts in response to Sunday’s EF-5 tornado and subsequent destruction.

Based on  the  remaining debris left in the wake of the storm, the City feels it cannot complete this effort without  assistance from higher levels of government.
Simply stated, because of the amount of clean up needed, the City has requested that SEMA (State Emergency Management Agency)  initiate the “Clean Sweep” effort.  This “Clean Sweep” operation allows the removal of debris from both private and public property, without having to extract permission from individual property holders so long as the work is in the best interest of public safety.  It is a new and innovative program recently used in other locations that have experienced similar disasters.

SEMA has forwarded this request to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) who administers this program and makes a final determination.

The City of Joplin will keep the community informed as this request is being processed by FEMA. Once approved, specific details to the program will be announced.
“Although the City is taking the lead in the cleanup process of the storm and its results, in order to advance to the next phase of clean up and rebuilding, the City of Joplin needs this,” said City Manager Mark Rohr.
Rohr also noted that the cooperation from FEMA, SEMA and other agencies and entities as we have worked through this process has been phenomenal .

The location has its own link to tragedy in the past, as it is built on the location of the old Bronc Busters Bar and Restaurant, where the life of Firefighter, Steve Fierro, 40, was claimed  when the popular bar and restaurant suffered a crippling fire.

It is only fitting that a tribute to those lost in the recent tornado be held there, as Steve Ferro was a hero, spending his life trying to save the lives of others.

Camping fees will be waived at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Table Rock State Park near Branson and Stockton State Park near Stockton in southwest Missouri. The waiver applies to all Missouri residents who are victims of the tornado outbreak in state-declared disaster counties of Jasper and Newton counties. The waiver will apply for 30 days, after which time each situation will be re-evaluated to determine if the stay needs to be extended.

Camping will be offered on available campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers will need to bring their own camping equipment and other supplies. If necessary, free camping will be extended to additional state park campgrounds.

People requesting the fee waiver should provide documentation from a governmental or charitable organization certifying that they have been displaced by the tornado.
